The development of the manual covering the teaching topic Computing in the Fifth Grade with the Help of Micro:bit Devices is part of the broader support provided by the British Council to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development to build teachers’ capacity to apply the new Informatics and Computing and Technics and Technology curricula, which introduces programming in teaching with the help of appropriate tools such as a Micro:bit.

After the publication of the material Programming Micro:bit Devices in MicroPaython – Manual for Project Teaching for the Seventh and Eighth Grade, the team of authors from the Pelja Foundation continued their engagement on the project “21st Century Schools” with project activities that include the development of new materials and teacher training. 

In this light, we have created a new material called Programming Micro:bit devices in MakeCode - a Manual for the Fifth Grade, which covers the entire material for the subject Computing in the fifth grade, i.e. 16 hours of programming and four hours of project teaching. 

Since fifth-graders encounter programming for the first time, using a Micro:bit device and a block environment such as MakeCode is an excellent starting position to begin developing an algorithmic way of thinking. Teachers can use this Manual to process the entire fifth-grade Computing curriculum. The Manual itself is filled with task examples, project proposals, and short tests to evaluate acquired knowledge, which can be found at the end of each lesson.

In addition to creating open educational resources, in the coming period, the team of authors from the Pelja Foundation will organize teacher training courses for the fifth-grade Informatics and Computing teachers. 

Reminder, “21st Century Schools” is a three-year project which envisages that, by mid-2021, all primary schools in the Western Balkans will receive micro:bit devices that will be used in computer science and other subjects including training on critical thinking and problem-solving.
